Not TOO cerebral.  I don&#039;t want to have to learn physics or chemistry to understand the novel.
Too many plots (sub) in one book.  HATE it when I don&#039;t like a character but the next chapter is &quot;him&quot;...so I just skip the chapter!  Kind of counter-productive, eh?
Replays of the latest real-life (read celebrity) events, changing the names to protect the...who?
Constant conflict.  No one / nothing is in &quot;tension&quot; forever.  Some downtime (normalacy?) is needed for relief.  The last three paragraphs of resolution just don&#039;t cut it. (though it&#039;s likely I might not make it that far...constant tension makes me agitated and I quit reading!)
Don&#039;t like to be made to feel stupid.  If I want that I&#039;ll pick up a textbook.  
A condescending tone directed toward the reader doesn&#039;t win any points with me.
